How airsoft works
Airsoft is team-based tag with realistic replica equipment that shoots 6mm plastic BBs. Games run at dedicated fields — indoor CQB arenas and outdoor woodland — with referees, structured game modes, and strict safety rules. It’s closer to paintball’s strategy with far less mess, and the equipment realism is why military and law-enforcement programs train with the same gear.
The gear divides into three families: AEGs (battery-powered — consistent, low-maintenance, the right first gun), gas blowback (real recoil kick, more maintenance — the enthusiast’s choice), and spring (single-shot, mostly sidearms and snipers).

Find your field
Search “airsoft field near me” — most run open-play weekends with rentals, so you can even try before you buy. Arrive 45 minutes early for chrono and waivers.
Chrono, brief, play
The field measures your gun’s speed (see FPS below), walks everyone through safety rules, then you’re in 15–20 minute rounds all day. Say you’re new — airsoft communities adopt rookies fast.
FPS & field rules, translated
FPS (feet per second) is how fast your BB leaves the barrel. Every field sets limits — commonly around 350 FPS for close-quarters indoor play and higher allowances outdoors. If your gun shoots too hot for an indoor field, you can’t play. Simple as that.
